GREENSBORO, N.C. — Janet Ward Black, a pioneering North Carolina attorney and former Miss North Carolina, has died at the age of 66, according to the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA).
Black, who passed away Sunday, was a beloved figure in both the legal community and public service. She served as president of the NC Bar Association and the NC Bar Foundation from 2007 to 2008, becoming one of the most respected voices in state law.
Born Feb. 15, 1959, in Kannapolis, Black’s early years reflected her drive for excellence and leadership. After being crowned Miss North Carolina in 1980, she pursued higher education with equal determination, graduating from Davidson College in 1982 and earning her law degree from Duke University School of Law in 1985.
A Trailblazer in Law and Leadership
As founder and principal attorney of Ward Black Law in Greensboro, Black built one of the largest woman-owned law firms in North Carolina, focusing on personal injury, workers’ compensation, and consumer advocacy. Colleagues credit her not only for her legal acumen but also for her mentorship and commitment to opening doors for women in the legal profession.
“Janet Ward Black was more than a lawyer — she was a leader, mentor, and a servant to her community,” said an NCBA spokesperson. “Her influence extended well beyond the courtroom.”
Remembering Her Legacy
Black was widely recognized for her philanthropy and faith-based service, often describing her work as “a calling to help others find justice.”
A memorial service will be held November 14 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, with a reception to follow in the Mullin Life Center.
Her passing marks the loss of a trailblazing attorney and civic icon whose grace and determination bridged the worlds of beauty, justice, and service to others.
