Borella – A tragic road accident near the Borella Cemetery Roundabout in Colombo on the morning of 28 July left one person dead and over five others injured, police have confirmed. The collision occurred when a crane truck, believed to have experienced brake failure, ploughed into six motorcycles and three cars during peak traffic.
Emergency teams rushed the injured victims to Colombo National Hospital, where they remain under treatment. Authorities are yet to release details about the deceased as investigations continue.
Preliminary findings point to faulty brakes as the cause of the crash. Road safety advocates stress that such incidents highlight the pressing need for stricter vehicle maintenance checks. “Heavy vehicles require frequent inspections, especially those operating in busy city areas,” said a local traffic safety expert.
Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene, with multiple vehicles damaged and traffic in the area brought to a standstill for hours. The incident has sparked public concern on social media, with many calling for tighter enforcement of road safety standards.
