Jackson, Kentucky Mourns Loss of 10-Year-Old Jayden Spicer

Jackson, Kentucky – The community of Jackson, Kentucky, is grieving the loss of 10-year-old Jayden Spicer, a cheerful and energetic boy who was preparing to start the fourth grade at Highland Turner Elementary School. His life was tragically cut short on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, leaving loved ones devastated.

Authorities have confirmed that Jayden’s mother has been charged in connection with his death. For his family, the grief is compounded by shock. “It feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from,” said his aunt, Samantha Brunty. Another aunt, Chy Salyers, shared the anguish of searching late into the night for Jayden—only to learn that the truth had been known all along.

Despite the tragedy, the Jackson community is rallying to support the family. Local resident Josh Turner, who initially set up a fundraising campaign to help bring Jayden home safely, is now using those funds to assist with funeral costs. Father Jim Sichko, a well-known priest from Lexington, has also stepped in to help ease the family’s financial burden.

Jayden’s funeral arrangements are being handled by Breathitt Funeral Home, with final service details yet to be announced. Born on October 4, 2014, at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, Jayden was known for his joyful energy and love for life. He enjoyed Fortnite and Roblox, idolized Spider-Man, and could often be found outdoors riding his four-wheeler, playing sports, or jumping on the trampoline.

He is survived by his aunts Samantha Brunty and Chy Salyers, uncle Michael Hays, siblings Mia Spicer, Aliyha Spicer, Hunter Gross, River Gross, and Fisher Gross, and a “like-a-grandmother” figure, Linda Salyers. He also leaves behind many cousins, friends, and classmates who will miss him dearly.

Jayden was preceded in death by his grandmother, Shirley Faye Johnson, who raised him until her passing in May of this year. Those who knew Jayden remember his laughter, kind heart, and adventurous spirit—qualities that will remain in their memories forever.

Funeral service information will be shared once available, as the community prepares to say goodbye to a boy whose light, though brief, shone brightly.
