Fatal Bus Crash in Calhoun County Involves Iowa Lakes Baseball Team, One Dead and Multiple Injured

CALHOUN COUNTY, Iowa — One person has died and multiple others were injured after a bus carrying members of the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team crashed on Highway 4, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The accident occurred just north of the Twin Lakes area, prompting authorities to close Highway 4 in both directions for several hours. Officials have not yet released the name of the person killed. Injuries among passengers range from minor to serious, state patrol officials confirmed.

A spokesperson for UnityPoint Health said 10 patients were transported to a hospital in Fort Dodge, while two others were taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for further treatment.

In a statement, Iowa Lakes Community College confirmed its baseball team was en route to Arkansas for a scheduled game against the North Arkansas Pioneers when the crash occurred. The college said it is working closely with local authorities and is directly communicating with affected families. “The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the statement read.

Rep. Randy Feenstra, who represents Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, expressed concern and gratitude for emergency responders. “I am deeply concerned about the accident and thankful for our law enforcement and medical teams responding quickly at the scene,” he said.

The North Arkansas Pioneers also shared a message of support, asking their community to “lift up everyone involved” in prayer.

Bus accidents involving collegiate athletic teams are rare but often deeply felt, as they impact tight-knit campus communities. As investigators work to determine the cause, the focus remains on supporting those injured and mourning the life lost in a journey that began as a routine road trip for competition.
