ROCHESTER, Ill. — A close-knit central Illinois community is mourning the loss of Jack Zucco, a Rochester High School student and wrestler whose death was confirmed Saturday.
In a Facebook post, St. Jude Parish shared that the Zucco family had been part of the parish community, expressing condolences and asking for prayers. A day earlier, the Rochester High School Wrestling page reposted a message from Jack’s father, Marc Zucco, stating that his son had been airlifted from Galena after receiving CPR. He was on oxygen but unconscious at the time.
By Saturday, the team confirmed Jack’s passing. “Jack Zucco was a warrior on and off the mats,” the wrestling program wrote. “Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Rochester, a small community just southeast of Springfield, often rallies around its schools and parish life during times of crisis. Counselors are typically made available in situations involving student loss, reflecting a broader trend across Illinois schools to prioritize mental health support after traumatic events.
Friends and teammates described Jack as resilient and dedicated — qualities that define the sport of wrestling itself. As tributes continue to pour in, many are remembering not only his competitiveness, but his character and the bonds he built within his school and church communities.
