Palmetto Expressway Accident: Two Injured, One Airlifted After Entrapment Crash in Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A violent crash turned the Palmetto Expressway into a scene of emergency chaos Friday morning, leaving two people injured—one so seriously that a rescue helicopter had to land directly on the asphalt.

The collision happened in the southbound lanes of State Road 826 near Northwest 36th Street, a notoriously congested corridor where rush-hour speeds often clash with sudden braking. Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the crash involved injuries, but the most harrowing detail came from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue: the initial 911 call reported entrapment.

“Units arrived to find one patient still inside the vehicle,” a rescue spokesperson said, describing the delicate extrication process. Crews worked with hydraulic tools as traffic cameras showed a wall of first responder vehicles blocking all southbound lanes. Overhead footage also captured a medical helicopter touching down on the expressway—a rare but necessary maneuver when ground transport would take too long.

One of the two victims is now pending air rescue to a regional trauma center. Their identity and condition have not been released. The other patient is being treated locally.

Commuters faced miles of backup, and FHP has not yet said what caused the crash. For now, drivers are urged to avoid the area. “You never think a Friday morning drive will end like that,” said one witness who declined to give their name. “The helicopter landed right in the middle of the road. It was surreal.”
