Two Dead Following Major Crash Near Pittsburgh’s Fort Duquesne Bridge
Two people have died after a devastating multi-vehicle crash near Pittsburgh’s Fort Duquesne Bridge sent one vehicle plunging over an interchange onto a street below, according to public safety officials.
The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on Pittsburgh’s North Shore at the split between Route 65 and Route 28. Authorities said five vehicles were involved in the collision, which quickly prompted a large emergency response from police, firefighters, and EMS crews.
Officials confirmed that the male driver of the vehicle that went over the bridge railing died at the scene after the car crashed onto Reedsdale Street below. A second victim, a woman trapped inside another heavily damaged vehicle on the bridge, was rescued using the jaws of life and transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando described the incident as a “very serious crash,” while investigators continued working to determine what caused the chain-reaction collision.
Several other people involved in the accident were evaluated by EMS at the scene but declined further medical treatment. Authorities said the remaining drivers and passengers were able to walk away unharmed.
The dramatic nature of the crash drew widespread attention across the Pittsburgh area, particularly due to the location’s heavy traffic and complex interchange design. Traffic disruptions lasted for hours before Route 65 reopened later in the evening, according to PennDOT.
As investigators review evidence and witness accounts, officials are urging drivers to remain cautious on high-speed urban interchanges, where even a single moment of error can lead to catastrophic consequences.
