SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A large-scale search and rescue operation remained underway Tuesday evening after a recreational boat carrying 19 people capsized and sank in the San Francisco Bay, leaving one person dead, two others missing, and several passengers injured, according to city officials.
The incident occurred approximately 600 yards off Alcatraz Island, prompting an immediate multi-agency emergency response involving the San Francisco Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other regional public safety agencies.
Authorities said rescue efforts continued into the evening as crews battled strong winds, rough water, and limited visibility in hopes of locating the two missing passengers.
Massive Search Underway in Challenging Conditions
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said emergency responders shifted into “full rescue mode” shortly after the incident was reported.
By approximately 5:30 p.m., rescue teams had deployed:
- 11 rescue boats
- Multiple dive teams
- Search helicopters
- Marine rescue specialists
Officials said search crews concentrated their efforts east of the accident scene after evaluating tidal currents and prevailing winds that may have carried the missing individuals.
“We are going to continue for hours to make sure that we find these two missing people, if possible,” Crispen said during an evening news briefing.
Rescue operations were expected to continue through nightfall if weather and safety conditions allowed.
Initial Emergency Call Reported Boat Fire
The San Francisco Fire Department said crews were initially dispatched at approximately 3:35 p.m. following reports of a vessel fire in the bay.
However, first responders arriving on scene found no evidence of a fire. Instead, they discovered a three-deck pontoon boat overturned and largely submerged.
Officials described the vessel as mostly underwater when rescuers arrived.
Emergency personnel launched what Fire Chief Crispen called a “massive rescue operation,” removing trapped passengers from the vessel’s upper deck while others were recovered from the surrounding water.
One Person Dies Despite Rescue Efforts
Authorities said one individual was found in the water with life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters immediately initiated CPR before transporting the victim to shore at Gashouse Cove Marina, where the person was later pronounced dead.
Officials have not yet released the victim’s identity pending family notification.
A dog that was aboard the vessel also died in the accident.
Survivors Accounted For
According to the San Francisco Fire Department:
- One person died
- Two people remain missing
- Three people were hospitalized with injuries sustained after entering the water
- Thirteen passengers safely reached shore
Officials said the total number of occupants aboard the recreational vessel was 19.
The conditions of those hospitalized have not been publicly released.
Wind and Tidal Conditions Complicate Search
Fire officials said weather conditions significantly complicated rescue efforts.
Strong afternoon winds generated whitecaps across San Francisco Bay, reducing visibility and making search operations more difficult for divers and rescue boats.
Authorities said tidal movement and wind direction were being continuously monitored as search patterns were adjusted throughout the evening.
Mayor Offers Condolences
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie expressed sympathy for the victim’s family while emphasizing that rescue efforts remain active.
“I want to express my condolences to the family members of the deceased, and I want to make sure that every family member out there and everybody knows that we are in an active search. There is much more to be done.”
Officials stressed that locating the two missing passengers remains the highest priority.
Cause of Capsizing Under Investigation
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vessel to overturn.
Authorities said the boat departed from the area near the St. Francis Yacht Club before the incident.
As the vessel continued sinking, responders observed fuel leaking into the surrounding water while the boat’s engine continued emitting exhaust.
Marine investigators are expected to examine the vessel once recovery operations are completed to determine whether weather conditions, mechanical failure, operator actions, or another factor contributed to the accident.
No evidence of criminal activity has been announced.
Family Reunification Center Established
City officials established a family reunification center at Fort Mason, where relatives of passengers could receive updates and support as rescue efforts continued.
Authorities said additional information, including the identities of those involved and findings from the investigation, will be released as it becomes available.
The incident remains under active investigation by local and federal maritime authorities.
