Auckland – A teenage boy has died after being struck by a train at a pedestrian railway crossing near Baldwin Avenue train station in Mt Albert, Auckland, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Police were called to the scene at about 3:28 p.m. after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a train. The teenager, who was a student at Mount Albert Grammar School, died at the scene.
His family has identified him as Vintonia Luka Viqasi, also known as Vinnie Jr or Buka. Following the tragedy, Mount Albert Grammar School confirmed the student’s death and said support was being provided to students, staff and the family. The school also lowered its flag to half-mast as the school community mourned the loss.
The railway crossing and surrounding area were temporarily cordoned off while emergency services responded and authorities began their investigation.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the death on behalf of the Coroner. The investigation is expected to establish the events leading up to the collision. At this stage, details surrounding how the teenager entered the crossing have not been publicly established.
A Givealittle fundraising page, organised by the teenager’s aunt, has also been established to assist the family with funeral and related expenses.
The fatality has renewed attention on safety around railway crossings in Auckland, where pedestrians and trains share areas with potentially serious consequences when crossings are used unsafely.
Other deaths have recently been reported in the wider Mt Albert area, including a September 11 medical emergency on New North Road. That incident involved bystanders performing CPR before the person died, with the death referred to the Coroner.
There is currently no established evidence that a particular Mt Albert road is officially known as a “death road.” The recent railway fatality occurred at the Baldwin Avenue pedestrian crossing.
