Derek Phillips, a 20-year-old University of Iowa student and member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, has died after collapsing during the football team’s season opener on September 5.
Phillips, from Peosta, Iowa, suffered sudden cardiac arrest during the game at Kinnick Stadium amid extreme heat. He was transported to University of Iowa Hospital, where he remained critically ill. His family later announced that severe brain damage led them to make the decision to remove life support. Phillips died Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred shortly before the marching band was scheduled to perform its halftime show against Northern Illinois. Temperatures in Iowa City reached 94 degrees that day, and the band ultimately cancelled its halftime performance because of the heat.
Phillips was a third-year student studying business analytics and information systems. He joined the Hawkeye Marching Band in 2024 and served as a mellophone section leader.
University officials and band leaders remembered him as a talented musician, dedicated student and supportive friend. His family also described him as a gifted musician whose passion for music shaped much of his life. He had recently completed a summer season with a drum and bugle corps.
The university held a moment of silence in his honor before the following Cy-Hawk game, while marching band members wore black ribbons. The band’s halftime performance also included a field formation spelling “Derek.”
Other college marching bands joined the tribute, including Iowa State, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
The university made counseling and crisis-support resources available to students and members of the School of Music following Phillips’ death.
His passing has deeply affected the University of Iowa community, particularly the students and musicians who knew him through the Hawkeye Marching Band.
