Durham – A tragic North Carolina firefighter death has left the Durham community and firefighting colleagues mourning after 24-year-old firefighter Andrew Brokes died while responding to a major building fire on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

What Happened in the Durham Fire?
Fire crews were dispatched at approximately 3:15 a.m. to a fire at a multi-story building at 410 Marly Drive, near U.S. Highway 70 in southeast Durham. Responders arrived minutes later and encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.
According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, part of the building collapsed at about 3:31 a.m. The collapse brought down the second floor and trapped firefighters working inside.
