Dancer Janina Garraway, Star of Chris Brown’s “Say Goodbye” Video, Dies After Cancer Battle

Los Angeles — The entertainment and dance communities are mourning the death of Janina Garraway, the talented performer best known for her starring role in Chris Brown’s 2006 music video for “Say Goodbye.” Garraway passed away in late October 2025 after a private battle with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. She was in her early 40s.

Chris Brown paid tribute on Instagram Stories, writing: “Rest in peace, Janina. I love you and I’m so grateful to have worked with you and have you as part of this family. My heart goes out to your child and your family. You were and will always be a light to this world.” His mother, Joyce Hawkins, also shared her condolences.

Garraway began dancing at age 6 in her hometown of Colton, California, and was teaching by age 12. She signed with the prestigious Dorothy Day Otis agency in 1999 and trained in jazz, ballet, hip-hop, and more. Over her career she performed and collaborated with artists including Mariah Carey, Usher, Babyface, Paula Abdul, and Kanye West, appearing on major stages and television shows. In 2016 she founded the Garraway Performing Arts Center to mentor young dancers.

Diagnosed in March 2024 just weeks after giving birth to her son, she underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries while continuing to teach when possible. A GoFundMe organized by a close friend raised tens of thousands to help with medical costs.

Colleagues and fans remembered her as a gifted artist, educator, and devoted mother whose light extended far beyond the spotlight.
