Rogério Renato, 55, Brazilian University Rector Struck by Roofing Material at Landmark in Arizona

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona: A fatal accident at Taliesin West, the historic desert home of renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, has led to the temporary closure of the landmark as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a visiting Brazilian university leader.

Rogério Renato Mateucci, 55, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Brazil, died on October 16 after roofing material was reportedly dislodged by strong winds and struck him during a guided walking tour of the property, according to Arizona’s Family, a local news outlet.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. local time in Scottsdale, near Cactus Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where Mateucci was pronounced dead.

Scottsdale police are investigating the incident as a suspected weather-related accident. Authorities have said they do not suspect foul play. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office is responsible for determining the official cause of death.

Taliesin West Closed After Fatal Incident

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which operates the historic property, expressed condolences to Mateucci’s family and loved ones. The foundation also confirmed that Taliesin West would remain closed to the public until further notice while officials complete their work.

The closure affects a major architectural attraction in Scottsdale, where visitors explore Wright’s distinctive approach to designing buildings that respond to their natural surroundings.

Established in 1937, Taliesin West served as Wright’s winter residence, architectural studio and experimental laboratory. Built in the foothills of Arizona’s McDowell Mountains, the complex incorporates local stone and desert sand into its architecture. It is recognised as a National Historic Landmark and forms part of the internationally recognised legacy of Wright’s work. <Cite refs={[“turn308106search1″,”turn308106search9”]}/>

A Loss Felt in Brazil

Mateucci had served as rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná since 2022. News of his death prompted mourning at the university, which announced the suspension of classes and administrative activities at its campuses in Brazil.

The university’s response reflected the loss of a senior academic leader whose responsibilities included overseeing one of the country’s established Catholic higher-education institutions.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances of the fatal incident remain under investigation. Officials have not publicly established every detail surrounding the roofing material that struck Mateucci.

For now, the closure of Taliesin West marks an immediate consequence of the tragedy at a site celebrated for its architectural history and cultural significance.

Further information is expected from authorities as the investigation progresses. Updates should be based on official statements and verified reporting.
