PUYALLUP, Washington, — A man was killed Wednesday afternoon after a freight train struck him near a railroad crossing in downtown Puyallup, according to local police and emergency responders. Another person was initially reported injured, but police later clarified that the second person had tried to help the man before the collision.
The incident occurred at the North Meridian crossing near 201 North Meridian Avenue, close to the Puyallup train station. Authorities said the collision was reported shortly after 2 p.m. local time.
Puyallup police identified the deceased as a 59-year-old man who was using an electric wheelchair. According to police, the wheelchair was on the tracks, and two people nearby attempted to help him move to safety before the train arrived. Their efforts were unsuccessful.
The train involved was a BNSF freight train, according to reports citing police. Officials have not publicly established all the circumstances that led to the collision.
Police Operations Captain Jeremy Hedrick said preliminary information did not indicate that the incident was intentional, describing it as a tragic accident, according to KOMO News. Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events before a definitive account can be given.
Railroad Crossings Closed After Collision
The crash disrupted traffic in downtown Puyallup, with North Meridian and nearby railroad crossings affected while emergency crews responded. Police advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes, including State Route 512, the Shaw Road Bridge and other nearby crossings where available.
The incident also affected regional rail service. Sound Transit reported delays to its S Line trains following the collision.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name in the reports reviewed for this article. Further details about the person who attempted to assist him, including the extent of any injuries, should be confirmed through subsequent official updates.
Investigation and Railroad Safety
The collision highlights the risks people face when mobility equipment becomes trapped or obstructed on railway tracks. Trains require substantial distance to stop, and even a brief delay in clearing a crossing can have fatal consequences.
Railway safety officials generally advise people to remain clear of tracks and contact emergency services immediately if a person, vehicle or mobility device becomes stuck at a crossing. People should not put themselves in danger while attempting a rescue.
The investigation into Wednesday’s Puyallup train accident remains ongoing. This report will require updating as police release further verified information about the circumstances of the collision and any additional findings.
