FORT LEE, New Jersey, — A fatal shooting on the George Washington Bridge triggered significant traffic delays during Tuesday evening’s commute after a motorist was found wounded inside his vehicle on the New Jersey-bound upper level, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Koran Irvine, 46, of Valley Cottage, New York, was found shortly after 7 p.m. on October 20. He was transported to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators initially responded to reports of a vehicle crash before discovering that the driver had suffered a gunshot wound.
The incident is being investigated as a suspected road-rage killing, rather than an ordinary traffic accident. On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Victor Romero, a 62-year-old retired New York City police detective, had been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Irvine’s death. Authorities have not publicly disclosed all the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Investigation Causes Major Traffic Disruptions
The shooting prompted police activity on the bridge, which connects Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey, across the Hudson River. Authorities temporarily closed portions of the upper roadway while officers investigated the scene.
The closures caused substantial delays during the evening rush hour, affecting motorists travelling between New York and New Jersey. The bridge operator, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said the affected lanes reopened approximately five hours after the incident.
The George Washington Bridge is a major transportation corridor serving commuters, commercial vehicles and regional traffic. An incident requiring emergency response and forensic investigation can quickly create backups on the bridge and its approach roads.
Victim Remembered by Family and Colleagues
Irvine worked for Con Edison, the utility company confirmed in a statement expressing sorrow over his death. Family members described him as a devoted husband and father who worked hard to support his family. He was also remembered for his sense of humour and enthusiasm for the New York Jets.
His death has left relatives, friends and colleagues mourning the loss of a man whose life was cut short while travelling home.
Investigation Continues
The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, although the full sequence of events and any additional evidence must be established through the legal process. Romero has been charged, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
Authorities have not released every detail of the confrontation. Further updates from law enforcement and court proceedings may clarify what led to the shooting.
For commuters, the bridge has reopened following the investigation. Drivers should check official Port Authority traffic updates before travelling, particularly when emergency incidents affect this heavily used crossing.
