I-77 Crash Near Mooresville Causes Major Backups in Iredell County

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 South near Mooresville caused significant traffic backups Thursday morning, closing multiple lanes for several hours before crews cleared the scene.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 along I-77 South, just past Exit 33 to Williamson Road in Iredell County. Traffic cameras showed a tractor-trailer stopped in the far-left general purpose lane, adjacent to the toll lane, with emergency vehicles on scene. First responders closed the toll lane and two of the three general purpose lanes while investigating and clearing the wreckage.

At its peak, traffic backed up more than 10 miles, creating lengthy delays for morning commuters heading south through the Charlotte metro area. North Carolina Department of Transportation cameras and local traffic reports confirmed the extent of the congestion as drivers navigated the reduced lanes.

All lanes were reopened by approximately 10:15 a.m., restoring normal traffic flow. Officials have not released details on the cause of the crash or whether any injuries occurred. No information was immediately available on the number of vehicles involved beyond the tractor-trailer visible at the scene.

I-77 is a major north-south corridor connecting the Charlotte region with points farther north into Virginia and south toward Columbia, South Carolina. Morning crashes in this stretch frequently lead to extended backups due to high traffic volumes and limited alternative routes during peak hours.

Drivers were advised to use caution in the area and check real-time traffic apps or NCDOT updates for any residual delays. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision. No further disruptions were reported later in the day related to this specific incident.

The crash highlights ongoing challenges on heavily traveled sections of I-77, where commercial and passenger traffic converge near growing suburban areas like Mooresville.
