WESTERLO, N.Y. — A family of six, including three children, was involved in a serious crash Monday morning in the town of Westerlo.
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Route 401 and County Route 404. According to investigators, the SUV carrying the family failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with an oncoming northbound tractor-trailer.
Sheriff Craig Apple confirmed that one of the car’s occupants was killed. Three others, including a child, are in critical condition. All survivors were transported to area hospitals. Two helicopters were dispatched to assist with evacuations.
“The trucker never had a chance,” Sheriff Apple said. “He did all he could, but he never had a chance to avoid the car.”
The impact caused the tractor-trailer, which is registered out of Quebec, to overturn onto its side. The truck driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The SUV is registered in Virginia. Sheriff Apple said the family was believed to be traveling to Zoom Flume Water Park in East Durham at the time of the crash.
Dashcam video from the tractor-trailer captured the collision, but authorities do not plan to release the footage publicly.
The investigation remains ongoing.
