Helicopter Crash: Darren Bailey, Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate Mourns His Son, Wife and Two, Children in Montana

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — What began as a business trip for family and farm work ended in unimaginable tragedy for Illinois Republican gubernatorial hopeful Darren Bailey and his wife, Cindy. On Wednesday, October 22, four members of Bailey’s immediate family — his son Zachary, daughter-in-law Kelsey and their two children (12-year-old Vada Rose and 7-year-old Samuel) — were killed when their helicopter crashed in a remote region near Ekalaka, Montana.  A third grandchild, 10-year-old Finn, was not aboard and survived.

The crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Preliminary records describe the aircraft as a Robinson R66 turbine model, though investigators have not yet released a formal cause.

Why This Story Matters

Beyond the immense personal loss, this event resonates because it merges multiple dimensions: family farming operations, political life, and aviation safety in rural America. Bailey, a former state senator and representative, is mounting a challenge for the Illinois governorship in 2026 after his 2022 defeat. The deceased son Zachary was both a pilot and part of the Bailey farm business — an enterprise emblematic of the southern Illinois agricultural tradition.

In communities across Illinois and Montana, the incident prompts questions about the risks of small-aircraft travel, particularly in remote terrain. Montana’s Carter County authorities responded to the crash site in hilly “Chalk Butte” country, an area known for limited infrastructure.

Reactions and Community Response

In a campaign statement, Bailey’s team wrote: “Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them.”  Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also conveyed his condolences, saying he “cannot imagine losing a child, losing two grandchildren, and what they must be going through.”  Local residents in Bailey’s home region have begun rallying support, offering prayers and reaching out to the surviving grandchild and extended family.

The Road Ahead

For Bailey’s campaign and personal life, the immediate focus has shifted away from politics and toward grieving and healing. His running mate, Aaron Del Mar, described how the campaign structure is now helping the family navigate logistics and loss. At the same time, aviation safety experts note that smaller turbine helicopters flying in remote terrain face unique challenges, including weather, visibility and maintenance oversight.

As the investigation into the crash continues, the family, the political community and aviation observers will all watch for answers — and for how a farming-and-political family copes with a loss that transcends public life and enters deeply personal territory. The community’s solidarity, the questions about rural flight safety, and the enduring grief of the Baileys form a somber reminder of how fragile even the most ordinary-seeming journeys can be.
