Johannesburg — The South African entertainment industry is mourning the death of Meme Ditshego, a celebrated actress and comedienne, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 60 after a brief illness.
Her death was confirmed by her agency, Eye Media Artists, which described her as “a pioneer of performance” whose legacy would live on in South African storytelling. While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, her passing has sparked a national outpouring of tributes from fellow performers, fans, and cultural institutions.
With a career spanning theatre, television, and film, Ditshego left an indelible mark on the industry. She gained national recognition and critical acclaim for her SAFTA-winning portrayal of Josephine Ratau in the beloved sitcom Ga Re Dumele, which ran from 2010 to 2013.
She also appeared in other prominent TV shows such as The Coconuts, Muvhango, and Cobrizi on Mzansi Magic, earning a reputation for her range, humour, and depth.
Beyond the screen, Ditshego was a force in South African theatre. From grassroots township productions to touring with the Sobonile Players, her stage performances demonstrated her versatility and commitment to authentic storytelling.

Her family, through the agency, issued a heartfelt statement:
“It is with deep sorrow and reverence that we announce the passing of Meme Ditshego. A remarkable actress who brought joy and authenticity to every role. We are heartbroken but grateful for her incredible legacy.”
They also asked for privacy during this period of mourning.
“As her management, Eye Media Artists stands with her family during this painful time. And we kindly request privacy as they navigate this loss.”
