Pierce Eastman, JMU Student, Dies at 20 by Suicide in Harrisonburg

 

HARRISONBURG, Va.Pierce Eastman, a 20-year-old sophomore business major who was found deceased late last week at The Harrison, a student housing complex near campus. His body was discovered during a welfare check initiated by friends who had not heard from him.

On Monday, university officials confirmed Eastman’s death and extended condolences to his family, friends, and classmates.

Originally from Northern Virginia, Pierce was known among peers for his thoughtful personality, quiet strength, and sharp sense of humor. He was active in several student organizations and left a meaningful impact on campus life through friendship and involvement.

The Harrisonburg Police Department, in coordination with the Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, is continuing to investigate. Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of death was likely an accidental overdose, with no signs of foul play. Toxicology reports are pending. Officials stressed that the incident appears to be isolated and does not pose a risk to the broader campus community.

In its statement, James Madison University acknowledged the emotional toll of the loss and encouraged students to access mental health and grief support services. A candlelight vigil is being planned to honor Eastman’s life and provide space for reflection and solidarity.
