Toronto, ON – The baseball world continues to honor the enduring legacy of Tony Fernández, a Dominican-born shortstop whose career with the Toronto Blue Jays and beyond left an indelible mark on the sport—and on the hearts of fans and communities he touched.
Fernández, who passed away in February 2020 at age 57 due to complications from kidney disease, was a five-time MLB All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner. He was best known for his grace in the infield, instinctive base running, and signature sidearm throws, which helped define an era of Blue Jays baseball in the 1980s and early ’90s.
Born in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic—a cradle for baseball talent—Fernández rose from humble beginnings to become a cornerstone of the Toronto Blue Jays franchise. He played 12 seasons over four stints with the team, contributing to their historic 1993 World Series championship. He also wore the jerseys of the Padres, Mets, Reds, Yankees, Brewers, and Indians during his 18-year MLB career, amassing more than 2,200 hits.
“Tony brought elegance to the game,” said former teammate and Blue Jays Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar. “But more than that, he brought kindness to the clubhouse and compassion to every life he touched.”
Following his retirement in 2001, Fernández embraced a life of ministry. He became an ordained Christian minister and dedicated himself to humanitarian work through the Tony Fernandez Foundation, a nonprofit that provides education, healthcare, and housing assistance for underprivileged communities in the Dominican Republic and beyond.
His passing in 2020 was mourned across the baseball world. The Blue Jays organization released a statement calling Fernández “one of our club’s most celebrated and beloved players,” while fans shared thousands of tributes online, recalling his iconic plays and unwavering humility.
“He never sought the spotlight,” said longtime fan Jenna Morales, “but he always gave everything to his team—and later, to people in need.”
