The Maryland sports community is uniting in an extraordinary show of support for Hayden Pancake, a young lacrosse standout whose life was forever changed following a devastating accident earlier this month in Baltimore County.
On Tuesday, April 5, Pancake suffered a catastrophic spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. His sister, Madelyn Pancake, described her brother as “the kind of person who lights up any room — funny, charming, and able to make a friend out of anyone.”
Known for his easygoing nature and quick wit, Pancake was often the one breaking tension with a joke or lifting spirits during tough times. Now, his family is navigating an entirely new reality that will require intensive rehabilitation, ongoing medical care, and significant home modifications to meet his needs.
A Community Steps Forward
The response has been swift and heartfelt. A GoFundMe campaign set up for the family raised over $72,000 in less than 48 hours, with donations and messages pouring in from friends, teammates, coaches, and even strangers moved by his story.
“If you know our parents, you know they’re always the first to help when someone is in need,” Madelyn said. “This time, it’s our family that needs the help.”
Former coach Shawn Burke called Pancake “a wonderful young man and a true member of the lacrosse family,” urging others to contribute however they can. Family friends have also shared personal tributes, with Mary Muller-Thym Paxson recalling that Hayden has been her son’s best friend since seventh grade. “He’s someone Tucker could always count on,” she wrote.
Another supporter, Jess Quinones, emphasized the importance of rallying around the Pancake family. “In times like this, community means everything,” she said. “Whether you donate or simply share the fundraiser, every bit of support matters.”
The Road Ahead
Pancake’s recovery plan includes months of residential rehabilitation followed by outpatient therapy, nursing support, and occupational therapy. The family will also need specialized medical equipment and accessibility upgrades to their home.
“The costs are overwhelming — physically, emotionally, and financially,” the family noted in a statement. “But with help, we can make sure Hayden starts this next chapter with hope and strength.”
For now, the lacrosse community and beyond are proving that Hayden doesn’t face that road alone. His fight, matched by the determination of those around him, is becoming a testament to resilience — both his own and that of the people who love him.
