Joseph Romans: Muscle Shoals Community Mourns A Gifted Photographer, Whose Work Captured the Heart of North Alabama

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL — The North Alabama community is grieving the loss of Joseph Romans, a gifted photographer, artist, and devoted family man whose work has long celebrated the life, energy, and athletic pride of the region. Romans, based in Muscle Shoals and known for his company Joseph Romans Photography, passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of artistry and kindness that deeply touched those who knew him.

A Florence native and graduate of the University of North Alabama (UNA), Romans was best known for his visual storytelling that brought local sports and community events to life. His vibrant images for UNA Athletics became a hallmark of the program, preserving moments of triumph, teamwork, and spirit for student-athletes and fans alike.

His work told our story, and his presence on the sidelines will be greatly missed,” UNA Athletics shared in a heartfelt statement. “Through his lens, Joseph preserved the pride, joy, and emotion of our teams. His talent and heart captured the true spirit of North Alabama.”

Colleagues and fellow artists across the Shoals region have echoed that sentiment. Butler Studio, a neighboring photography business, described Romans as “a remarkable talent whose passion for his craft touched so many lives.” They added, “His work will continue to preserve the special memories he helped create for our community.”

Beyond his professional achievements, Romans was celebrated as a devoted husband to Valerie, a loving father, and a friend whose warmth and humor made every encounter memorable. Friends describe him as someone who not only documented life but lived it fully — with empathy, joy, and deep appreciation for the people around him.

In a community where photography serves as both art and history, Romans’ passing represents more than the loss of a talented creative — it’s the loss of a storyteller whose images captured the soul of North Alabama.

As tributes continue to pour in, many say his greatest legacy isn’t just the photographs he left behind, but the light and laughter he brought to every moment he captured.
