Lee Hui Li: Microsoft Singapore Managing Director Dies While on Sabbatical

SINGAPORE – The technology community in Singapore is mourning the sudden passing of Lee Hui Li, the managing director of Microsoft Singapore, who died on July 24 while on a sabbatical. Her age was not publicly confirmed. According to The Business Times, her wake is being held at the Church of St Ignatius on King’s Road from July 25, with her funeral scheduled for July 28.

A Visionary Leader in Tech

Lee Hui Li was appointed managing director of Microsoft Singapore in March 2022, following a successful tenure as general manager of Asia-Pacific enterprise commercial. Her career, spanning more than 27 years, included senior leadership roles at IBM, Symantec, Dell, HP, and EY. She was widely recognized for her ability to drive digital transformation and for her pioneering work in enterprise solutions across Asia.

A Microsoft spokesperson described her as “a visionary leader whose impact on Microsoft and the broader technology landscape in Singapore was profound. Hui Li mentored countless leaders, built inclusive teams, and inspired all of us to lead with purpose. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Hui Li’s family, friends, and colleagues.”

Championing AI and Inclusion

Lee was at the forefront of Microsoft’s AI initiatives in Singapore, pushing for sector-specific innovations and digital acceleration. In an interview with The Business Times last year, she outlined Microsoft’s goal of enabling AI adoption across large enterprises while focusing on sustainability and innovation.

She was also deeply committed to diversity and inclusion in the technology industry, particularly as an Asian woman leader in a traditionally male-dominated field. In a separate interview, Lee emphasized the value of diverse perspectives, stating, “Different viewpoints challenge groupthink and help build stronger, more innovative solutions.”

Community Reactions

News of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from industry leaders, colleagues, and former teammates. Many praised her authentic leadership style, strategic brilliance, and unwavering belief in Singapore’s tech potential.

“She was not just a leader but a mentor and friend to many of us,” said a former Microsoft colleague. “Her influence on the tech industry and her passion for nurturing future leaders will never be forgotten.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Lee Hui Li’s passing marks a significant loss for Singapore’s technology landscape. Her career trajectory, from earning an economics degree at the National University of Singapore to leading Microsoft’s operations in one of Asia’s most dynamic markets, reflects her dedication, resilience, and vision.

As the tech community remembers her contributions, her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders to build inclusive, innovative, and purpose-driven workplaces.
