A powerful personal story and an original song helped 22-year-old Mor Ilderton secure a golden ticket on American Idol during Season 24 auditions in Nashville.
Performing at Belmont University, the Teays Valley, West Virginia, native introduced his self-written ballad “Strong” by sharing the tragedy that shaped his childhood. Ilderton told judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan that he lost his biological mother at age two after his father took her life. The song, he explained, captures the emotions he felt upon seeing her photograph for the first time.
Raised by his grandmother, Sandy, Ilderton described her as his guiding force. In a surprise moment, she appeared during the audition, having flown in to support him despite not boarding a plane in more than two decades.
Though he briefly faltered at the start, Ilderton regrouped and delivered a vulnerable performance that resonated with the judges. Underwood noted his emotional connection to the lyrics, while Richie praised his vocal tone and songwriting ability. Bryan pointed to his overall potential as an artist.
