Roberto DiMascio: La Salle Academy Mourns World Languages Teacher, Remembered for His Impact on Generations of Students

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The La Salle Academy community is grieving the loss of Roberto DiMascio, a beloved World Languages teacher whose warmth, humor, and devotion left an enduring mark on generations of students. DiMascio passed away after a courageous fight, leaving behind his wife Mercedes and their two children, Dario and Sofia.

For 14 years, DiMascio served as an educator and mentor at the respected college-preparatory school in Providence, where he also moderated the Italian Club — a role through which he inspired countless students to explore language, culture, and connection. Known for his lively spirit and caring nature, he was described by students as “playful, passionate, and wise,” someone who made learning both meaningful and joyful.

In 2024, DiMascio was honored with the Donald J. Kavanagh, AFSC Heart and Soul Award, recognizing faculty members who embody La Salle’s mission of faith, community, and service. Colleagues say the award captured exactly who he was — a teacher who led with heart.

“God has taken a good one from us,” wrote Carlos Lopez Estrada, a close friend and colleague who paid tribute to DiMascio’s courage and faith. “My condolences to Mercedes, Dario, and Sofia, as well as the entire DiMascio family.”

The school’s administration shared that grief counselors will be available to support students and staff during this time. In a public statement, La Salle Academy described DiMascio as “a man of deep compassion, who built bridges through language and touched lives far beyond the classroom.”

A Life Devoted to Family, Faith, and Community

Outside the classroom, DiMascio was a devoted husband and father who found joy in family life and in his faith. Friends say his genuine care for others reflected a deep belief in education as a calling — not just a profession.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former students and fellow educators across Rhode Island, many of whom credit him with shaping their confidence and worldview.

As the La Salle Academy community gathers to remember him, one message echoes across every post and conversation: Roberto DiMascio’s legacy is one of kindness, connection, and enduring faith.

He will be deeply missed — but never forgotten.
