Valerie Caven, 20, Life was Claimed by a Semi Truck on Highway 14 in Blue Earth County: MNSU Mourns Student

Blue Earth County – The Minnesota State University, Mankato community is mourning the loss of Valerie Caven, a 20-year-old student from Farmington who was killed Friday morning in a crash involving a semi truck on Highway 14 in Blue Earth County.

According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, the collision occurred around 10 a.m. near the intersection of Highway 14 and Minnesota Highway 60 in Mankato. Caven’s Lexus sedan collided head-on with a Freightliner semi driven by a 46-year-old man from St. Peter, who was not injured. Emergency responders pronounced Caven dead at the scene.

Remembering Valerie Caven

Friends and classmates have described Valerie as “bright, compassionate, and full of promise.” A GoFundMe page set up to assist her family has raised more than $39,000 toward a $70,000 goal as of Sunday — a testament, organizers say, to how deeply she was loved.

“As they navigate this unimaginable time of sorrow, we’d like to surround them with love and support in practical ways,” the fundraiser reads. “One of the most meaningful ways we can help is by donating what you can to ease their daily burden.”

Community Impact and Broader Context

The tragedy has renewed attention on Highway 14, a stretch of southern Minnesota road long regarded by residents and safety advocates as hazardous. The state has invested in ongoing safety improvements and four-lane expansions along the corridor, following years of advocacy to reduce fatal head-on collisions.

At Minnesota State Mankato, counselors and university officials have offered support services to students coping with the loss.

“Valerie was a valued member of our Maverick community,” one faculty member said. “Her kindness and curiosity touched everyone she met.”

As the investigation continues, the Farmington and Mankato communities are remembering Valerie not only for the tragedy of her loss, but for the light she brought during her short life — a reminder of how fragile and precious every journey can be.
