Dr. Melz Owusu, a powerful voice for radical education and healing, passed away following a tragic accident in Bali. His legacy continues through the Free Black University and his acclaimed book, Undisciplined.

BALI –  Dr. Melz Owusu, the visionary founder of the Free Black University (FBU), died following a tragic accident in Bali.

Born in the UK and most recently based in Margate, Dr. Owusu was a scholar, activist, and gifted writer. His debut book, Undisciplined, published shortly before his death, reflects his lifelong passion for dismantling traditional academic boundaries and nurturing new ways of thinking rooted in love and care. One of his most quoted lines, “To love is to heal, to heal is to love,” continues to resonate with the many people he inspired.

Through FBU, Melz championed a vision of education that centered Black voices, imagination, and healing justice. He challenged colonial structures within academia and envisioned a future where Black students and thinkers could thrive on their own terms.

Melz lived life with intention and joy. Though his years were few, his accomplishments were many — from launching transformative initiatives to sharing his bold ideas across communities and continents. His impact will continue to echo through the people and movements he helped shape.

A funeral has been arranged, and his family and friends have been informed. Tributes have poured in across social media and from educational, activist, and literary circles around the world. Many continue to mourn collectively, holding space for grief, reflection, and gratitude for all that Melz gave.

We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones and all who are grieving this loss. Dr. Melz Owusu’s life was a testament to radical love, deep thought, and fearless imagination. His words, work, and spirit live on.
