A 12-year-old Ridley Township girl has died and her best friend remains in critical condition after a devastating scooter crash in Aston, their families confirmed on Monday, June 16.
Abigail Gillon, 12, and Isabella “Bella” Jones, 11, were riding a shared electric scooter around 2:18 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 near Lehr Boulevard and Concord Road when they were struck by a car, according to Aston Township Police.
Both girls suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware. Gillon died two days later from a severe traumatic brain injury, her family said.
“My brother and sister-in-law lost their amazing daughter,” Abigail’s uncle, Steve Gillon, wrote. “Abigail was the sweetest 12-year-old you would ever meet.”
Her mother, Lori Kralle, confirmed Abigail was not allowed on a scooter and had been attending a sleepover that night. She announced her daughter’s organs would be donated to save others:
“Abigail… my best friend, my only daughter is saving another child by donating her kidneys and liver — that’s what she would have wanted.”
Abigail’s cousin, Brooke Laverack, reflected on the child’s radiant spirit and close family bond.
“She wasn’t just any kid—she had a way of making everyone laugh, and a personality unlike any other… I was so lucky to have her as my cousin.”
Meanwhile, Bella Jones continues to fight for her life in the hospital. Her cousin Joyce Cardwell launched a fundraiser, noting both of Bella’s parents will be out of work to remain by her bedside:
“She is currently at DuPont hospital in critical condition fighting for her life… Please continue the prayers for both families.”
Community support has been overwhelming. Ridley Township’s Board of Commissioners issued a heartfelt statement:
“We are devastated to learn of Abby’s passing… Bella remains in critical condition. We are holding her close in our thoughts, praying for healing, strength, and comfort.”
A balloon release vigil in Abigail’s honor was held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at Ridley Middle School. Local businesses including Dino’s Style Pizza are contributing to the fundraising efforts.
Police say the girls may have lost control after hitting a curb before being struck. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. No charges have been filed.
