Columbia Community Pays Tribute to Colton James Harman After Tragic Death During Half Marathon
Family, friends, and members of the Columbia community are mourning the loss of Colton James Harman, a 24-year-old graduate of University of South Carolina who died while participating in the Greenville Half Marathon on February 28, 2026.
Harman, born November 19, 2001, in Columbia, was remembered as a vibrant young man whose enthusiasm for sports, faith, and friendship shaped much of his life. News of his sudden death during the race has prompted an outpouring of tributes from classmates, teammates, and community members.
He graduated from Blythewood High School in 2020, where he was active in athletics, playing baseball and football. His passion for sports continued into college, where he studied business with a minor in sport administration at the University of South Carolina. During that time, he was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and participated in philanthropic events organized by the group.
After earning his degree, Harman began working as a field service representative with ACO Med Supply in Greenville, where colleagues say he brought dedication and positivity to his role.
Outside of his professional life, Harman remained deeply connected to his faith community at Village Church in Blythewood. Friends describe him as someone who loved the outdoors, enjoyed traveling and cooking, and rarely missed cheering on the Gamecocks during football season.
His passing has also renewed discussion about sudden cardiac emergencies during endurance events. Groups like Heart of the Game—founded by former Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw—continue working to raise awareness and improve emergency response for sudden cardiac arrest in athletic settings.
Funeral services were scheduled at Village Church, followed by burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Those who knew Harman say his bright smile, humor, and loyalty to friends and family will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
