Michael Clayborn Obituary: a Longtime Pastor Funeral and Memorial Information

Michael Clayborn, a respected pastor, public servant, and longtime resident of DeKalb County, Tennessee, passed away on June 2, 2026, at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. He was 73.

Clayborn’s death marks the loss of a community leader whose life was defined by faith, service, and dedication to the people of DeKalb County. Over the course of five decades in ministry and years of public service, he became a familiar and trusted figure to generations of residents.

Born on July 26, 1952, Clayborn was the son of the late Ed and Lorretta Parkerson Clayborn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pattie Clayborn; his son, Brian Scott Clayborn; and his brother, Charles Clayborn.

According to family members, Clayborn made a profession of faith at the age of 10 and later felt called into ministry in 1973. A devoted member of New Home Baptist Church, he spent approximately 50 years preaching, conducting revival services, supplying pulpits, and serving as pastor of several congregations throughout the region.

Known affectionately as “Bro. Mike” by friends, church members, and community residents, Clayborn earned a reputation for his commitment to sharing his faith and supporting local churches. His ministry touched countless lives across Middle Tennessee, where he became known for his approachable nature and dedication to pastoral care.

In addition to his religious service, Clayborn played a significant role in local government. He served as DeKalb County Court Clerk from 2002 until 2014, a position in which he worked closely with residents and contributed to county operations for more than a decade.

Outside of ministry and public service, Clayborn was known for his love of sports, particularly his unwavering support for the University of Tennessee. Family and friends often described him as a devoted Volunteers fan whose enthusiasm for the team was a defining part of his personality.

He is survived by his sons, Michael Patrick Clayborn and his wife, Wendy, of Dowelltown, and Matthew Braden Clayborn and his wife, Amber, of Smithville; grandchildren Emily and Ella Clayborn and Jacob Moore; his sister, Joyce Boyd of Smithville; several nieces and nephews; and special friend Jan Clayborn.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 5, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the church of the donor’s choice in Clayborn’s memory.

As family, friends, and community members gather to honor his life, Michael Clayborn is being remembered for his enduring faith, decades of ministry, and lasting contributions to DeKalb County.
