Devanesan Chokkalingam (Deva) Tamil Music Director Dies at 75

Chennai – Veteran Tamil music director Deva, celebrated for his distinctive compositions and contribution to bringing Chennai’s gaana music into mainstream cinema, died in Chennai on Saturday, October 17, 2026. He was 75.

Known widely as “Thenisai Thendral,” Deva built a career spanning nearly four decades, composing music for more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema. His death marks the loss of a prolific composer whose work helped shape the sound of commercial Tamil films through the 1990s and beyond.

According to reports, Deva experienced chest pain on Saturday morning and was taken to a hospital in Chennai, where doctors were unable to revive him. News of his death prompted tributes from across the film industry and from music lovers who grew up listening to his songs.

One of Deva’s most enduring associations was with superstar Rajinikanth. The composer created the familiar introductory music associated with the actor’s on-screen appearances, helping establish a musical signature that generations of fans came to recognize. His work connected with Rajinikanth’s films, including Annamalai, Baashha and Arunachalam, remains an important part of his legacy. Reports have also linked the signature music with the actor’s more recent film appearances, including Jailer 2.

Deva also helped bring gaana, a street-rooted musical tradition associated with Chennai, to a wider cinema audience. Rather than relying solely on established film-music conventions, he developed a recognizable style that incorporated the energy and rhythms of the city. That distinctive sound gave him an identity in an industry where composers such as Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman had established formidable reputations.

Beyond composing, Deva worked as a singer and lyricist. His contributions earned him recognition, including the Tamil Nadu government’s Kalaimamani award. His musical legacy also continues through his son, music director Srikanth Deva.

Deva’s death is a significant moment for Tamil cinema, where music often becomes inseparable from a film star’s identity. His compositions helped create memorable cinematic experiences, and his influence on gaana music remains central to how his career is remembered.

As tributes continue, Deva leaves behind an extensive body of work that connected popular cinema with the sounds and spirit of Chennai.
