Jarmond Johnson: Mentor at MRC and CC, Among Two Killed Shot in South Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jarmond Johnson, a 25-year-old staff member and beloved mentor at Memphis Rox Climbing and Community Center, was fatally shot on Sunday, June 29, during an altercation outside the facility. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from the South Memphis community where he worked tirelessly to inspire youth and uplift others through climbing and service.

Police confirmed that Johnson was one of two victims killed in the shooting. The second victim has not yet been identified. Memphis Police arrested 28-year-old Farris Haley, who faces charges of evidence tampering and resisting arrest after allegedly removing the firearm from the scene.

From Climber to Community Leader

Johnson joined Memphis Rox in 2019, quickly becoming a cornerstone of the organization’s mission to use climbing as a vehicle for social change. Located in South Memphis, Memphis Rox operates on a pay-what-you-can model and provides mentorship, meals, job training, and safe recreation for youth in underserved neighborhoods.

Colleagues describe Johnson as a role model, always encouraging others to pursue excellence. “He was my brother,” said Michael McCann, a fellow Memphis Rox employee. “He was motivational and always pushed me to be better.”

Johnson’s commitment extended far beyond the climbing walls. He was featured in short documentaries that told stories of perseverance and family, including a film about his relationship with his mother, Florence. In 2023, he led a climbing trip to Kenya that was later picked up for streaming, signaling the scope of his growing influence.

Tragedy at a Place of Peace- The shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. outside the Memphis Rox facility. According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, an argument escalated into violence. Johnson, known for remaining calm in crisis, reportedly assisted others even after he was injured. Witnesses said he tried to render aid and maintain order amid the chaos.

He was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The other victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Community Devastated by Loss- In a heartfelt post, Memphis Rox confirmed Johnson’s identity and described him as a “light in our gym and community.” The center has temporarily closed its doors to allow staff and members time to grieve, with plans to reopen the following week.

“This gym was built as a beacon of hope in a struggling neighborhood,” one community member posted online. “Jarmond embodied everything it stood for—kindness, strength, and a refusal to give up on people.”

Beyond his work at the gym, Johnson had recently shared his excitement about becoming a father. He hoped to build a future grounded in community and legacy. Those dreams were tragically cut short.

Calls for Action and Remembrance- Johnson’s death has reignited conversations around gun violence, public safety, and the fragility of community spaces in underserved areas. Leaders in Memphis and the national climbing community have issued statements of support, emphasizing the need for policy change and deeper investment in safe, inclusive environments. Memorial services are currently being planned, and community members have begun organizing vigils and donation drives to support Johnson’s family. Counseling services are being made available to staff and local youth affected by the tragedy.

A Legacy of Impact- Jarmond Johnson wasn’t just an employee. He was a mentor, a brother, a soon-to-be father, and a role model for young people who came through the doors of Memphis Rox. His story—marked by resilience, leadership, and an unwavering belief in others—will remain part of the foundation he helped build. As Memphis Rox prepares to reopen, it does so with the memory of a man who gave everything to his community. His life was an example of what it means to serve with humility, love, and strength.
