Accident: One Killed in Early-Morning Crash on Florida’s Turnpike Near Sweetwater, Officials Say

A deadly crash on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike early Tuesday left one driver dead and shut down traffic for hours near the Northwest 12th Street exit close to Sweetwater, according to reporting from Local 10 News.

Authorities confirmed that the victim, described as a Hispanic man driving a Ford pickup truck, died at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck involved in the collision was not injured.

High-Speed Impact Under Investigation

Preliminary details released by the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that the pickup truck struck the rear of the semi-truck at a high rate of speed. The force of the impact sent the pickup into the right concrete barrier while the semi-truck lost control and hit the left barrier.

“The Ford collided into the rear of a semi-truck at a high rate of speed,” an FHP spokesperson told Local 10, describing the sequence that ultimately closed three southbound lanes for nearly five hours.
