A Community United in Grief and Support
The town of Benton, Louisiana, is grappling with profound heartbreak following a single-vehicle UTV accident on Merritt Road that claimed the lives of 31-year-old Callie Durbin Hebert and 10-year-old Bella Cassell on April 11, 2026. According to Louisiana State Police, the vehicle overturned after leaving the roadway, ejecting all three passengers.
In the wake of this tragedy, the “Benton Tigers” baseball program is stepping forward to lead the healing process. A Spirit Night fundraiser is scheduled for April 22 at 5:30 p.m., with all proceeds directed to the affected families. The event holds deep historical significance, as Callie’s father, Brad Durbin, was a member of Benton’s inaugural baseball team in 1986.
“We just want to… wrap our arms around those families and bring a little light to a situation that has been tragic,” said Benton Head Coach Dane Peavy.

Safety Awareness and Local Impact
While the investigation remains ongoing, state troopers have used this moment to issue a somber reminder regarding UTV safety. Officials noted that the passengers were not restrained or wearing DOT-approved helmets at the time of the crash.
Community members like Ashley Hays and Ashlee Novak Snyder have taken to social media to amplify donation efforts, emphasizing the need to support Callie’s husband, Matt, and their children. This grassroots response underscores the resilience of Bossier Parish, where local sports and neighborly bonds often serve as the primary safety net during times of unimaginable loss.
