Faith Winter, Car Crash: Colorado Officials are Mourn State Sen

Colorado is grieving the loss of state Sen. Faith Winter, whose death in a car crash along Interstate 25 has sent shock waves through the political community. While investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the collision, tributes from colleagues paint a vivid picture of a leader whose impact stretched far beyond the chamber floor.

Winter was widely known for her legislative work, but those closest to her say her most enduring legacy may be the generations of women she trained, mentored, and inspired to pursue public service.

“Faith was a mom, a fiancée, a friend — and the person who shaped me into who I am,” said state Rep. Jenny Willford, who described Winter as both her mentor and one of her closest friends. Willford explained that Winter guided her through running for office, then worked alongside her as a colleague. “She led with her heart and fought for what she believed in.”

State Sen. Lisa Cutter shared similar reflections, saying Winter consistently uplifted others throughout her years at the Colorado State Capitol. “She always tried to lift me up,” Cutter said. “Our policy goals aligned, but more importantly, I loved her spirit.”

Winter was known for championing transportation improvements, environmental protections, and policies supporting working families. Yet those who knew her describe an equally passionate devotion to her children. Willford recalled their “Hike It Sundays,” weekly adventures exploring trails across Colorado — a practice that grounded Winter’s legislative drive.

Her influence extended beyond lawmakers. Sara Loflin, executive director of ProgressNow Colorado, called Winter “a trailblazer” whose legislative achievements — from equal pay initiatives to climate justice — will shape the state for decades.

As tributes continue, colleagues say the Capitol feels emptier. “She was a light,” Cutter said. “And the Capitol will be a much darker place without her.”
