LAKE PEPIN, Wis. — Three people died after a 27-foot pontoon boat collided with a commercial vessel on Lake Pepin late Saturday night, prompting an extensive overnight search and rescue operation involving emergency responders from both Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Authorities confirmed the fatalities on Sunday, July 12, following a coordinated response led by the Pepin County Sheriff’s Office and Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office. The victims have not yet been publicly identified as officials continue notifying their families.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is leading the investigation into what caused the fatal collision.
Emergency Call Sparked Multi-Agency Rescue
According to a joint statement released by the Pepin County and Wabasha County sheriff’s offices, emergency dispatchers received reports of people screaming for help at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.
First responders rushed to the scene near the YMCA camp on Deer Island, where they discovered an overturned pontoon boat floating just offshore.
Three survivors were found clinging to the overturned vessel when rescue crews arrived.
The survivors informed rescuers that three other passengers remained missing, triggering an intensive overnight search involving multiple agencies from both states.
Large-Scale Search Ends in Tragedy
Rescue teams deployed a wide range of specialized resources, including:
- Rescue boats
- Aerial drones
- Search helicopters
- Specialized water rescue personnel
- Marine recovery equipment
Despite the extensive operation, responders ultimately recovered the bodies of all three missing occupants from Lake Pepin.
The Pepin County Coroner pronounced each victim dead at the scene. Their bodies have since been transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies to formally determine the causes of death.
Authorities have not released the victims’ names out of respect for their families and until next-of-kin notifications are complete.
No YMCA Camp Participants Were Involved
Officials emphasized that no campers or staff members from the YMCA camp on Deer Island were involved in the collision.
The clarification came after early reports noted the accident occurred near the popular youth camp, raising concern among local residents and families.
Investigation Underway
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which oversees boating accident investigations throughout the state, has assumed responsibility for determining exactly how the collision occurred.
Investigators are expected to examine several factors, including:
- The movements of both vessels before impact
- Visibility and lighting conditions
- Weather and lake conditions
- Vessel speed
- Navigation practices
- Possible mechanical issues
- Operator impairment or distraction, if applicable
Officials have not announced whether alcohol, excessive speed, or equipment failure played any role in the incident.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has photographs, video footage, or other relevant information is encouraged to contact investigators.
Lake Pepin and Recreational Boating Safety
Lake Pepin, a naturally occurring lake on the Mississippi River between Wisconsin and Minnesota, is one of the Upper Midwest’s busiest destinations for recreational boating, fishing, and water sports.
During the summer months, the lake experiences heavy traffic from both recreational watercraft and commercial vessels, making safe navigation especially important during evening hours and periods of reduced visibility.
Boating safety experts recommend that operators:
- Maintain a proper lookout at all times.
- Wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
- Display appropriate navigation lights after sunset.
- Operate at safe speeds for existing conditions.
- Remain alert to commercial vessel traffic.
- Avoid operating boats while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
A Recent Series of Fatal Boating Accidents
The Lake Pepin tragedy comes amid a concerning increase in fatal boating incidents across Wisconsin during the summer recreation season.
Just over a week earlier, three children younger than 11 lost their lives after their boat capsized during a powerful storm on Geneva Lake, underscoring the risks posed by changing weather conditions and emergencies on open water.
While investigators have not indicated that weather contributed to the Lake Pepin collision, both tragedies serve as sobering reminders of the importance of boating preparedness, situational awareness, and adherence to safety regulations.
Community Mourning
As investigators continue working to determine what led to the collision, communities on both sides of the Wisconsin–Minnesota border are mourning another devastating loss on the region’s waterways.
Authorities have asked the public to respect the privacy of the victims’ families while the identification process continues and the investigation moves forward.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is expected to release additional information as evidence is reviewed and the investigation progresses.
