MILAN — Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martínez was involved in a tragic accident on Tuesday that left an 81-year-old man dead near the club’s training facility in Appiano Gentile, just outside Milan.
According to Italian media reports, the elderly man was using an electric wheelchair when he veered from the designated cycle path into the roadway, where Martínez was driving. Investigators believe the man may have suffered a sudden medical episode moments before the collision.
Martínez, 26, immediately stopped his vehicle and, along with other motorists, rushed to assist the victim. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, arrived quickly, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Local authorities have opened an investigation, but early reports suggest that Martínez was not at fault. Witnesses described the goalkeeper as visibly shaken but physically unharmed.
In a gesture of respect, Inter Milan canceled a scheduled press conference with youth coach Cristian Chivu following the incident. The club has not yet issued an official statement but is understood to be offering full cooperation with police and support to those affected.
The tragedy has sparked sympathy across Italy’s football community, with fans and fellow players expressing condolences to both the victim’s family and Martínez.
