Sydney Tradesman Dies After Electrocution on Cherry Picker in Randwick Workplace Accident

RANDWICK, NSW — A 47-year-old tradesman has died after being electrocuted while operating a cherry picker during a workplace incident in Sydney’s eastern suburb of Randwick. The accident occurred just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday on Darley Road and has prompted investigations by both New South Wales Police and SafeWork NSW.

The man, believed to be an employee of Ausgrid, reportedly came into contact with overhead power lines while elevated in the cherry picker. The contact caused a cardiac arrest. Co-workers quickly brought him to the ground and began CPR until paramedics arrived and took over resuscitation efforts.

He was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition but sadly could not be saved and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police have confirmed that a crime scene was established, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner. SafeWork NSW is also conducting an investigation into how the incident occurred and whether all workplace safety protocols were followed.

In a brief statement, an Ausgrid spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the death of their colleague: “We are devastated by the loss of one of our team members. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and co-workers during this incredibly difficult time.” The company also confirmed its full cooperation with the ongoing investigations.

As a result of the incident, several Randwick residents experienced temporary power outages. Ausgrid crews remained on-site through the afternoon and evening to safely restore electricity to the area.

The tragic event has highlighted the high-risk nature of electrical and utility work, especially in proximity to live power lines. The specifics of how contact was made remain under review by authorities.

This workplace fatality has sent shockwaves through the local community and serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety in all industrial and trade settings.

Further details, including the man’s identity and funeral arrangements, have not yet been released out of respect for the family’s privacy.
