Paula, Goa – Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, on Thursday, October 8, 2026. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed his death. Patekar was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him for about 45 minutes before he was declared dead at approximately 5:20 a.m.

Who Was Nana Patekar?

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Nana Patekar built a career spanning almost five decades across theatre, Marathi cinema and Hindi cinema. His intense performances, distinctive voice and forceful dialogue delivery made him one of India’s most recognizable character actors.

Patekar made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978. His breakthrough work included Ankush, Parinda, Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Prahaar, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome. He also directed Prahaar: The Final Attack, establishing himself as a filmmaker as well as an actor.

Reports say he contacted a friend around 2:30 a.m., mentioning discomfort and pain on his left side. By approximately 4 a.m., the friend reached his residence and found him unresponsive. CPR was started at the house and continued during the ambulance journey.

Patekar was declared dead at 5:20 a.m. His death was registered as a medico-legal case, and his body was transferred to Goa Medical College for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have said the medical procedure is intended to establish the precise circumstances and cause of death.

Patekar was married to Neelakanti Patekar, and they have a son, Malhar. Reports about their marriage have often described the couple as separated while remaining connected through family. Neelakanti and Malhar were reported to have arrived at Goa Medical College following his death.
