Atlanta Roller Coaster Death: Hassan Kariem Dies at Six Flags

MABLETON, Georgia – A fatal roller coaster accident at Six Flags Over Georgia has prompted an extensive safety investigation after a 42-year-old Atlanta man fell from the Goliath attraction, leaving his family and community grieving.

Authorities identified the victim as Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, an employee of Wesley International Academy who worked in information technology, taught technology and coached robotics. The incident occurred on October 12, according to Cobb County police.

Investigators said preliminary information indicated that Kariem was ejected from the ride before striking other patrons and falling beneath the attraction. Several people were reported injured. Authorities have not publicly established what caused him to fall.

What Happened on the Goliath Roller Coaster?

Goliath is a major attraction at Six Flags Over Georgia in Mableton, northwest of Atlanta. The hypercoaster reaches approximately 200 feet in height and speeds of up to 70 mph, according to published ride information.

Witnesses described seeing Kariem leave his seat near the end of the ride. Emergency responders attended the scene, and police began investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

The accident raised immediate questions about passenger restraints and ride safety. Goliath uses lap-bar restraints, and investigators are examining the equipment and operational records to determine what happened.

Safety Investigation Underway

Georgia’s Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner confirmed that its investigators and engineers are conducting a detailed examination of the ride, including its equipment, operating procedures and inspection records. Cobb County police are leading the law enforcement investigation.

The state agency said Goliath passed its most recent inspection on March 16, 2026, with no violations, deficiencies or citations reported at that time. Investigators are reviewing those records as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Following the incident, Six Flags temporarily closed several similar roller coasters across its North American parks as a precaution. The company said it was cooperating with authorities.

Six Flags Over Georgia subsequently reopened to visitors, while Goliath remained closed pending the investigation.

Remembering Hassan Kariem

Kariem’s death has brought grief to Atlanta’s education community. Wesley International Academy and Atlanta Public Schools expressed condolences, recognizing his contribution to the school community.

His death has also renewed public attention on amusement-ride safety and the responsibility of operators and regulators to protect visitors.

What Comes Next?

Investigators have yet to release a final determination explaining why Kariem was ejected from the ride. The state agency has said it will share findings when its investigation is complete and determine what conditions must be met before Goliath can resume operation.

For now, the central questions remain under investigation as Kariem’s family, colleagues and community mourn his death.
