Authorities Say Washington Twp. NJ Fire Was Murder-Suicide, Identities Pending

WASHINGTON TWP., NJ — Authorities have confirmed that a house fire early Sunday morning in Gloucester County, New Jersey, which left two people dead, was the result of a murder-suicide.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office released a statement Tuesday confirming that a man and a woman found deceased inside a home on Tranquility Court in Washington Township died in a domestic murder-suicide. Their identities have not yet been publicly released, pending official confirmation by the county medical examiner.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just after 2 a.m. on May 12, following reports of a fire and a possible explosion. Firefighters quickly responded and extinguished the blaze, but inside the home they found the bodies of a man and a woman.

According to investigators, the man—believed to be the tenant of the home—was discovered in the living room with a handgun nearby. The woman was found in a bedroom and had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Authorities say the evidence indicates she was killed before the fire began.

The Gloucester County Medical Examiner has ruled the man’s death a suicide resulting from the fire. The woman’s death has been classified as a homicide.

Investigators also reported finding evidence of accelerant use in the home and confirmed that the gas line had been tampered with to allow an unrestricted flow of natural gas—indicating a deliberate attempt to cause an explosion. Authorities have not disclosed how long the individuals had been deceased before emergency personnel arrived.

For residents of the quiet cul-de-sac, the violent and tragic circumstances surrounding the fire have been difficult to comprehend. Neighbors described the home as unassuming and said they were unaware of any signs of trouble.

Michael Gay, who lives nearby, expressed disbelief. “Never saw anything weird or out of the ordinary as long as I’ve been living here,” he told Action News. “You never know what’s going on in everybody’s house in private.”

The incident has shaken the community, raising questions about mental health, domestic violence, and the hidden struggles that can exist behind closed doors. Officials have not confirmed the nature of the relationship between the man and the woman.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and Washington Township Police Department continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and the events that led up to the deaths.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Allen Williams at the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office at 856-384-5622 or Detective Matthew Laudenslager with the Washington Township Police Department at 856-589-0330 ext. 1176.
