Carol Anne Johnson, Dies at 71 Unexpectedly: Hockessin, DE Community Mourns a Retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant and Educator

HOCKESSIN, Del. — Carol Anne Johnson, a retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sergeant, educator and longtime Delaware resident, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 7, 2026. She was 71.

Born in Chicago to Harold and Leona Johnson, Carol enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after high school, training as a Russian linguist during the Cold War era. She was stationed at historic Tempelhof Airport in Berlin before completing her active service with the National Security Agency in Maryland. She later joined the Air Force Reserves, ultimately retiring with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant — a testament to decades of commitment and leadership.

After her military career, Johnson earned degrees from Illinois State University and Wilmington University, graduating with distinguished honors. She built a professional career as a consultant and later held positions at DuPont and AstraZeneca, two major Delaware employers, before retiring. In her later years, she returned to the classroom as an adjunct professor at Wilmington University, mentoring graduate students.

Family members describe Johnson as a gifted singer, devoted reader and woman of deep faith. “Carol’s life was defined by service — to her country, her students and her church,” a family friend shared.

In death, that service continues. Through organ donation, Johnson helped four individuals by donating her kidneys, liver and corneas — a decision advocates say reflects a growing but still critical need nationwide for registered donors.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Ernie Frisicchio, son Derek, and extended family. A memorial service will be held Feb. 21 at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church in Wilmington. She will later be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring her military service and enduring legacy.
