Don Tibbetts Obituary, Manchester, NH — The Manchester community is grieving the loss of Don Tibbetts, a beloved former physical education teacher at Manchester Central High School, who passed away this week. Known affectionately as “Mr. T,” he retired in 2007 after years of shaping young lives with compassion, humor, and authenticity.
A graduate of Central himself and a proud alumnus of Norwich University, Don returned to his alma mater to teach and mentor future generations. He was remembered by students as energetic, supportive, and always quick with a laugh. Though his booming voice and bold personality could be intimidating at first, his heart and sincerity quickly won people over.
“He made you feel welcome, no matter who you were,” said one former student. “He created a safe space before that was even a thing.”
Don came from a family deeply rooted in Manchester’s educational and athletic history. Like his father and brother—both local icons in their own right—Don left a mark that extended beyond the gym. He mentored young teachers, pulled aside substitute educators to encourage them, and consistently reminded others to pursue their calling with purpose.
A standout moment in his career came during Central Week in 2007, when the school celebrated Dress Like Tibbetts Day. Students and staff dressed in his signature style: tie-dye shirts, mismatched Converse, glasses, and of course, the mullet and mustache combo. It was a lighthearted tribute to a man who brought joy into the building every day—and a moment he was truly honored by.
Don later retired to LaBelle, Florida, but remained closely connected to his Central roots. News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of memories, with messages from students and former colleagues reflecting the deep impact he had on their lives.
He is survived by his wife, extended family, and a community of former students and colleagues who will carry his lessons—and laughter—with them always.
Don Tibbetts wasn’t just a teacher. He was a legend. And Central has lost one of its greatest.
