Gabe Ontiveros: Turlock’s Beloved Educator and eCademy Charter Principal Who Touched Generations

The Turlock community is mourning the loss of Gabe Ontiveros, a respected educator, mentor, and principal at eCademy Charter School, whose passing this past weekend has left a deep void in the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) and beyond.

During Monday’s TUSD Board of Trustees meeting, Board Clerk Lori Carlson delivered a moving tribute, pausing to honor Ontiveros’ nearly three decades of unwavering service to students, families, and staff.

“Gabe was a valued member of our Turlock Unified School District, serving in many roles and sites for over 28 years,” Carlson said. “He was a teacher, administrator, mentor, and coach who had an unwavering commitment to the students, staff, and families of TUSD. We are so grateful for the lasting impact Mr. Ontiveros made in TUSD.”

A Lifelong Educator and Leader

Ontiveros’ journey through education reflected both dedication and heart. A graduate of California State University, Stanislaus, where he earned his Master’s degree in Education, he built a distinguished career that spanned multiple campuses within the district.

From his early years teaching at Dutcher Middle School and Osborn Two-Way Dual Immersion Academy to his leadership roles as Assistant Principal at Turlock High School (2013–2016) and Principal at eCademy Charter (2016–2017 and beyond), Ontiveros was known for his approachable leadership and deep belief in every student’s potential.

Colleagues describe him as “the kind of leader who listened first, encouraged often, and led with integrity.” His calm demeanor, empathy, and sense of humor made him a trusted mentor not only to his students but also to fellow educators navigating their own paths.

A Legacy Beyond the Classroom

For many in Turlock, Ontiveros was more than an educator — he was a cornerstone of the community. His influence extended into homes, classrooms, and staff rooms alike, where he championed equity, connection, and lifelong learning.

Messages of grief and gratitude have filled local feeds in recent days, as former students and colleagues share memories of a man who celebrated every success — whether academic or personal — as if it were his own.

One parent wrote, “Mr. Ontiveros believed in my son when others didn’t. That belief changed everything for our family.”

Another former colleague recalled, “He taught us that leadership wasn’t about authority, but about service. He lived that truth every single day.”

Honoring a Life of Purpose

As the community gathers to honor his life, many are reflecting on the quiet yet profound ways Ontiveros changed the fabric of education in Turlock. Whether through innovative programs, mentorship of young educators, or the countless students he encouraged to keep trying, his presence shaped lives that will continue to ripple outward for years to come.

Board Clerk Carlson’s words captured the collective sentiment:

“May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him. We will miss you, Gabe.”

Though his passing leaves the district mourning, his impact — built through kindness, consistency, and a lifelong belief in the power of education — remains deeply etched in the hearts of those who knew him.
