Obituary: Remembering James “Jimmy” Carter of Murrells
Inlet MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — The coastal community of Murrells Inlet mourns the loss of James “Jimmy” Carter, 42, who passed away on July 22, 2025, following a tragic shooting incident near Waties Drive. Known for his infectious laughter and unwavering dedication to his family and friends, Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of warmth, resilience, and quiet strength that touched countless lives in Horry County.
Jimmy was born on March 15, 1983, in Conway, South Carolina, where he grew up fishing along the Waccamaw River and mastering the art of low-country cooking. A self-taught mechanic, he spent over two decades at Coastal Auto Repair, where his knack for fixing anything with an engine earned him the nickname “GearTickler.” Colleagues remember him as the guy who’d stay late to help a stranded customer, always with a story to share and a cold soda to offer. His love for the Carolina coast was evident in his weekend ritual of crabbing with his two children, Emily and Mason, teaching them to appreciate the marshlands he cherished.
A devoted father and husband, Jimmy’s world revolved around his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Laura, in 2002, and their home was a hub of laughter, homemade shrimp boils, and impromptu guitar sessions. Jimmy’s community involvement was equally profound; he volunteered with the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk cleanup crew, ensuring the area remained a jewel for locals and tourists alike.
His faith guided him, and he was a familiar face at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, where he often helped organize youth fishing trips. The circumstances of Jimmy’s passing—a shooting that also left another individual hospitalized—have shaken Murrells Inlet, a tight-knit community unaccustomed to such violence.
Horry County police continue their investigation, assuring residents there is no ongoing threat. Jimmy’s critical injuries proved insurmountable, but his spirit endures in the stories shared by those who knew him.He is survived by his wife, Laura; children, Emily and Mason; parents, Robert and Susan Carter; and a wide circle of friends who will forever miss his quick wit and generous heart.
A memorial service will be held at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church on July 28 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk Preservation Fund, reflecting Jimmy’s love for his coastal home. The community is invited to share memories at the service or by calling 843-915-8477 with information to aid the ongoing investigation. Jimmy Carter’s life was a testament to the power of community, family, and living with purpose—a legacy that will ripple through Murrells Inlet for years to come.
