Esther Park, Kempton Park – South African motorsport champion Robert Wolk, 41, was fatally shot in Esther Park, Kempton Park, on Wednesday evening, September 16, 2026, following a confrontation after a minor road collision.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that a murder investigation was opened after Wolk was shot at the intersection of Camwood Street and Portland Drive. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene and that no arrests had been made as of September 18. The motive remains under investigation.
According to witness accounts reported by local media, Wolk’s Audi was involved in a low-speed collision with a Volkswagen Jetta. He reportedly got out to assess the damage, after which an argument developed. Witnesses said a firearm was produced and Wolk was shot as he attempted to leave the confrontation. These details remain part of the ongoing police investigation.
Wolk had built a motorsport career spanning almost three decades, competing in karting, single-seaters, touring cars and circuit racing. His achievements included South African championship titles in Formula Volkswagen, Formula 1600 and GTC. In 2026, he won the King of the Hill title at the Simola Hillclimb and continued competing at national level. He had been due to race in Cape Town that weekend.
The shooting occurred as authorities were separately investigating multiple women’s deaths in the wider Kempton Park area. SAPS has described similarities between some of those cases while continuing to investigate possible links. There is currently no official indication that Wolk’s killing is connected to those investigations.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wolk’s death.
