Newly released death certificates and autopsy findings have provided additional insight into the investigation of one of Michigan’s deadliest family homicide cases, indicating that Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz was likely killed hours before her six children.
According to records obtained by WOOD-TV News 8 and information released by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot his wife, Mandy Karolkiewicz, 39, before killing the couple’s six children and later dying by suicide inside the family’s Grand Haven-area home.
Authorities continue to investigate the precise timeline of events, but officials say the available evidence suggests Mandy’s death occurred before the children were killed.
Death certificates reviewed by News 8 list Mandy Karolkiewicz’s date of death as “on or after July 23, 2026,” while the deaths of the six children and Kristopher Karolkiewicz are recorded as July 24, 2026.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks told the station that investigative evidence and autopsy findings indicate Mandy “likely died earlier than the children,” although investigators have not established the exact sequence or timing of every event.
Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active as forensic specialists continue reviewing evidence.
What Investigators Say Happened
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot and killed every member of his immediate family before taking his own life.
Autopsies determined that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds. Medical examiners reported that each death occurred immediately or within seconds of the injuries being inflicted.
Following the shootings, investigators say multiple fires were intentionally set inside the residence in what authorities believe was an attempt to burn the home.
Emergency responders were first dispatched to the neighborhood after reports of the smell of smoke but were initially unable to locate its source.
Later that day, additional emergency calls prompted firefighters to enter the residence, where they discovered the bodies of two adults and six children in separate bedrooms.
The family’s three dogs and one cat also died in the fire.

Four of the children were the couple’s biological children.
Caroline and Ella were adopted from China. Only days before the tragedy, Mandy had publicly shared moments from a heritage trip to China with the girls—a journey intended to celebrate their cultural roots.
She worked as a substitute teacher and paraprofessional for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where administrators previously recognized her dedication to supporting students, particularly those facing emotional or academic challenges.
Investigators have not publicly identified a motive for the killings.
Authorities continue analyzing digital evidence, forensic findings, and witness information to better understand the circumstances leading up to the deaths.
