A tragic loss has struck the family of Mary Cosby, as her only child, Robert Jr., died Monday evening following a suspected overdose at the family’s Salt Lake City residence, authorities confirmed.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers responded to a call at approximately 6:12 p.m. reporting a possible overdose. By the time first responders arrived, Robert Jr. was unresponsive and not breathing. Dispatch audio indicated Narcan had been administered prior to police arrival, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
Cosby, known for her role on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement shared with TMZ.
“Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord,” she said. “Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace.”
A Public Struggle
Robert Jr., who had appeared on the Bravo reality series over multiple seasons, had openly faced addiction and legal challenges in recent years. Earlier this month, he was released from jail after serving time related to an alleged protective order violation involving his estranged wife.
Cosby had previously addressed her son’s difficulties during the show’s reunion with host Andy Cohen, expressing both concern and hope for his recovery. Court records and prior reporting by The U.S. Sun detailed earlier arrests tied to DUI and drug-related charges, as well as a stint in inpatient rehabilitation in 2024.
Why This Story Resonates
The case underscores the persistent toll of opioid addiction, which continues to affect families across the United States regardless of socioeconomic status. Public health experts note that overdose deaths often follow periods of relapse, reduced tolerance after incarceration, or interrupted treatment — factors frequently cited in similar cases nationwide.
On social media, fans and fellow reality TV viewers have expressed condolences while also reflecting on the broader addiction crisis. “This is every parent’s nightmare,” one supporter wrote, echoing a wave of sympathy for the Cosby family.
Production for the show’s upcoming season has reportedly been paused as the family grieves.
Authorities have not yet released a final cause of death pending further investigation.
