Massive Pile-Up on Mumbai-Pune Expressway Brings Traffic to a Standstill
A major accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway caused a traffic jam stretching nearly five kilometres, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred near Datta Food Mall, shortly after the descent from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section, one of the most accident-prone stretches of the highway.
According to preliminary reports, a speeding container truck allegedly suffered brake failure before crashing into another vehicle, triggering a chain-reaction collision that involved between 18 and 20 vehicles. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, one of India’s busiest highways, handles an estimated 1.5–2 lakh vehicles daily—a number that spikes significantly on weekends.
Severe Impact and Injuries
The force of the collision was devastating, with at least three vehicles completely crushed and several others sustaining major damage. Multiple passengers reportedly sustained serious injuries. Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to rescue the injured, provide medical aid, and clear debris from the road.

The pile-up brought traffic to a complete halt, forcing authorities to divert vehicles to alternative routes. Police personnel and highway officials remained on-site for hours, coordinating rescue operations and managing the heavy congestion.
